Biography

Kirk's plays, seen in New York, Minnesota, North Carolina, Louisiana and throughout Texas, have received numerous honors and awards including the David Mark Cohen New Play Award, the Concordia New Play Award, the Director's Choice Award from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, five B. Iden Payne Awards, and two Austin Critics Table Awards.

Critics have compared his acting and movement work to Bill Irwin's, called his singing voice “clear and radiant” and said of his writing, “It is as fresh as it is honest.” His newest play, The Deluge was a finalist in the Harvest Festival of New Plays at Sonoma County Repertory Theatre. Smith was recently awarded a playwriting residency at Concordia College in Moorehead, MN.

His adaptation of Dickens'A Tale of Two Cities was published last year by Encore Performance Publishing and the Soundtrack of his original musical, Despair's Book of Dreams and the Sometimes Radio is distributed internationally by Original Cast Records. Recent commissions include an adaptation of Herman Melville's Moby Dick, and Dead Technology Play, a new work for Capital Repertory Company.

Smith received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin and spent eleven seasons as a VORTEX Repertory Company member. Additionally, Smith is a Core Member of Austin Script Works. Among his other plays are Faustus, Divining a Night Raft, Drunk and The Administration Vanished.
