Commissioned by Summer Youth Theatre 2002, this precise and highly theatrical take on Melville's classic American novel unfolds through flashbacks, dialogue, movement and music. Detailing the relentless pursuit of the vulgar, vicious, and possibly supernatural white whale, the adaptation remains devoted to the language and the spirit of the original, effectively communicating the feel of life at sea, the danger of it, the feverish pursuit and foreboding it occasions, and the roles played by destiny and death . Full Length. 110 min.

  • Staged reading by Austin Script Works Austin, TX May 2002
  • Produced by SYT Austin, TX July 2002. Directed by Bonnie Cullum.

Nominated for 8 B. Iden Payne Awards including: Outstanding Original Script

Winner of 4 B. Iden Payne Awards including: Outstanding Production of a Play for Youth

“In Kirk Smith's adaptation of Melville's masterwork, language comes at us in great waves, and the language here is powerful.” --The Austin Chronicle
